The Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality (IASHS) was a private educational institution based in San Francisco, California, that offered graduate-level programs in human sexuality. It was closed permanently around 2018-2019.

  1. History: The institute was founded in 1976 by Rev. Dr. Ted McIlvenna, who aimed to establish a comprehensive educational institution dedicated to the study of human sexuality. It was one of the first academic institutions in the United States focused on this field.
  2. Programs and Degrees: IASHS offered a variety of academic programs and degrees related to human sexuality. These included master's and doctoral programs in human sexuality, as well as shorter-term certificate programs. The curriculum covered a broad range of topics, including psychology, sociology, biology, cultural aspects, and clinical applications of human sexuality.
  3. Faculty and Guest Speakers: The institute had a diverse faculty comprising experts in various disciplines related to human sexuality. Additionally, it regularly invited guest speakers and researchers from around the world to contribute to the educational programs and seminars.
  4. Research and Publications: IASHS aimed to foster research in the field of human sexuality. Faculty and students were encouraged to conduct research and contribute to the existing body of knowledge. The institute also published a journal called "The Journal of Sexology," which featured research articles, essays, and reviews related to human sexuality.
  5. Community Engagement: IASHS aimed to promote public understanding and dialogue on human sexuality. The institute organized conferences, workshops, and public lectures to engage with professionals, students, and the general public interested in the field.

The International Institute of Clinical Sexology was created by Dr. Carol Clark, a graduate of IASHS. Another IICS Board member, Dr. Marilyn Volker, also earned her degree at IASHS.
